Spencer Knight: A Rising Star in NHL Goaltending
Spencer Knight, born April 19, 2001, is an American professional ice hockey goaltender currently playing for the Chicago Blackhawks. He was a highly touted prospect, selected 13th overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, making him the franchise's first-ever first-round goaltender pick. Knight, who was inspired by Henrik Lundqvist, set a USA Hockey National Team Development Program record with 59 wins before excelling at Boston College, where he was named Hockey East Goaltending Champion and Player of the Year.
His NHL debut with the Panthers in 2021, just a day after his 20th birthday, was historic as he became the first goaltender born in the 21st century to play in the league. Knight made 36 saves in his subsequent playoff debut during the 2021 Stanley Cup playoffs, though the Panthers were ultimately eliminated. He began the 2021–22 season in a goaltending tandem but transitioned to a backup role as the season progressed.
