BrahMos Aerospace is a prominent Indo-Russian multinational aerospace and defense corporation, established in 1998 as a joint venture between India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia's NPO Mashinostroyeniya. Named after the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers, the company specializes in manufacturing advanced cruise missiles, with India holding a 50.5% stake.
Its flagship product is the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, renowned for its Mach 2.8 speed and an 800 km range. The corporation is also developing the hypersonic BrahMos-II and a new generation of BrahMos missiles with enhanced capabilities, leveraging India's membership in the MTCR for extended ranges.
The venture was conceived after the 1990s Gulf War, with its inter-governmental agreement signed by figures like India's A. P. J. Abdul Kalam in Moscow. BrahMos Aerospace operates major production facilities in Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram, and a significant new facility in Lucknow, inaugurated in May 2025, which aims to produce 100-150 missiles annually from 2026. This extensive network enables the design, development, manufacture, and marketing of one of the world's fastest supersonic cruise missile systems.
