NBC Sports is a major American sports programming division under NBCUniversal (owned by Comcast), founded on May 17, 1939, and responsible for broadcasting a vast array of events including the Olympic Games, NFL, NBA, MLB, NASCAR, Premier League, and Notre Dame football.

After Comcast acquired NBCUniversal in 2011, its cable sports networks were merged into the NBC Sports Group. Historically, the division faced setbacks in the early 2000s by losing MLB (2000) and NBA (2002) rights, but it experimented with ventures like the short-lived XFL (2001) and the Arena Football League (2003).

A major revival came in 2004 with an NHL deal (highlighted by the successful Winter Classic and record ratings for the 2009 Stanley Cup Final), followed by the NFL's return in 2006 with the flagship Sunday Night Football and multiple Super Bowls.

Looking ahead, in 2026 NBCUniversal will spin off most of its cable channels into a new company called Versant, though NBC Sports is expected to continue producing Olympics coverage and select telecasts on those networks.
