The Penn State Nittany Lions are the college football team representing Pennsylvania State University, competing in the NCAA Division I FBS as a member of the Big Ten Conference (which they joined in 1993 after a century as an Independent). Established in 1887, the program boasts two consensus national championships (1982 and 1986), four Big Ten titles (1994, 2005, 2008, 2016), and 13 undefeated seasons, ranking seventh all-time in Division I wins. They play their home games at Beaver Stadium in University Park, Pennsylvania, and have made 53 bowl appearances with a 34–21–2 record. Their early history includes a disputed first game against Bucknell in 1881, an official first season in 1887, and their first head coach, George W. Hoskins, who still holds the program's highest winning percentage (.760). The iconic Nittany Lion mascot was adopted in 1907, named after nearby Mount Nittany, replacing an earlier mule mascot called "Old Coaly."
