The J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome is an indoor multipurpose stadium on the campus of Northern Arizona University (NAU) in Flagstaff, Arizona, serving as the home for the Lumberjacks' football and basketball teams. Opened on September 15, 1977, it was the world's largest clear-span timber dome for six years until the Tacoma Dome was built in 1983, and its high elevation of 6,880 feet makes it the highest NCAA Division I FCS football stadium; its surface switched from AstroTurf to FieldTurf in 2002. The venue is named after former NAU president J. Lawrence Walkup, who creatively financed its $8 million construction through voluntary student fee increases and vending-machine revenue, with the name being applied in 1979. A major $26 million renovation from December 2010 to September 2011 modernized the facility, reducing capacity from 11,230 to 10,000 but adding wider 21-inch chair-back seating and improved amenities. Beyond sports, the Skydome hosts commencements, concerts, and trade shows, and it was formerly the summer training camp site for the NFL's Arizona Cardinals.
