The PlayStation 5 (PS5) is Sony Interactive Entertainment's ninth-generation home video game console, launched globally in November 2020 as the successor to the PlayStation 4. It offers two main variants: a base model with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive and a lower-cost Digital Edition without one, both of which saw slimmer hardware revisions in November 2023. A more powerful PlayStation 5 Pro model, boasting a faster GPU and AI-driven upscaling technology, was released on November 7, 2024.

Designed by lead architect Mark Cerny, a key innovation is its custom solid-state drive (SSD), which significantly reduces game loading times. The PS5 also features an AMD GPU capable of 4K resolution at up to 120 frames per second, hardware-accelerated ray tracing for realistic visuals, and the Tempest Engine for immersive 3D audio. Complementing these are the DualSense controller with haptic feedback, extensive backward compatibility with most PlayStation 4 games, and support for the PlayStation VR2 headset, collectively delivering a next-generation gaming experience.
