The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) is a professional organisation launched in August 2011, dedicated to identifying, awarding, promoting, and celebrating Australia's finest achievements in film and television. Established with the backing of the Australian Film Institute (AFI), AACTA took over the administration of the nation's premier industry accolades, rebranding them as the AACTA Awards (formerly the AFI Awards), which recognise excellence across feature films, television, documentaries, and short films.
The academy aims to elevate the profile of Australian screen productions both domestically and internationally, mirroring the structure of international bodies like the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) and British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). It is composed of 15 chapters representing diverse screen artists and is overseen by an Honorary Council. Acclaimed actor Geoffrey Rush served as the inaugural president from 2011 to 2017, also hosting the first AACTA Awards ceremony in January 2012.
