Starling Marte is a Dominican professional baseball outfielder currently playing for the Kansas City Royals, having previously played for five other MLB teams including the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he debuted in 2012. Raised by his grandmother after his mother's death, Marte signed with the Pirates in 2007 and made an immediate splash in his MLB debut by homering on the first pitch he faced, off Dallas Keuchel. He became a two-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove Award winner, earning his first Gold Glove in 2015 as a left fielder for the Pirates, and signed a six-year, $31 million extension in 2014. In 2021, he led the major leagues with 47 stolen bases, and he currently holds the active lead in career stolen bases with 363. His career includes stints with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Miami Marlins, Oakland Athletics, and New York Mets before joining the Royals. Known for his speed and defense, Marte also won the Eastern League batting title and Rookie of the Year in the minors before reaching the majors.
