USS Benfold
USS Benfold (DDG-65) is a Flight I Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer in the U.S. Navy, a multi-mission warship equipped with the Aegis Combat System, Tomahawk cruise missiles, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, and anti-submarine weapons. Named after Korean War Medal of Honor recipient Hospital Corpsman Edward Clyde Benfold, she was commissioned on 30 March 1996 and made history during the 2010 Stellar Daggers exercise as the first ship to simultaneously engage a ballistic missile and a cruise missile. The destroyer underwent extensive mid-life upgrades in 2011 and 2013, including the advanced Aegis Baseline 9C and Ballistic Missile Defense 5.0 systems, and has been homeported in Yokosuka, Japan, since 2015. In recent years, she has conducted multiple Freedom of Navigation Operations in the South China Sea (2021-2022) and was involved in a minor collision with a Japanese tug in 2017. Her former commanding officers include several high-ranking admirals, such as Admiral Mark Ferguson and Admiral Michael Gilday.
