The Defence Institute of Psychological Research (DIPR) is an Indian defence laboratory under the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), based in Delhi, dedicated to psychological research for armed forces personnel. Its origins trace back to 1943, when it began as an experimental board in Dehradun for selecting Indian Officers, later becoming the Psychological Research Wing (PRW) in 1949.
The institute expanded its scope significantly, being designated as the Directorate of Psychological Research (DPR) in 1962 and eventually becoming the full-fledged DIPR in October 1982 under DRDO's administrative control. DIPR develops crucial psychological assessment tools, including the Picture Perception Test and Thematic Appreciation Test, for officer selections and conducts vital research on areas like morale, leadership, and PTSD among service members.
Led by Dr. Arunima Gupta, the institute recently developed and trialed psychological assessment tests for Agniveer selections, with trials conducted during the 2023 recruitment year, reflecting its ongoing contribution to India's defence forces.
