The China Green Food Development Center (CGFDC), established in November 1992 under the Ministry of Agriculture, serves as the nation's first agency responsible for overseeing organic and "Green Food" standards. Joining the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) in 1993, the CGFDC has built an extensive national network of local regulatory and quality inspection agencies. Its core purpose is to promote food safety, protect the environment, and support sustainable economic and social development by developing policies and managing certified products.
The CGFDC oversees two "Green Food" standards, A and AA, which vary in the permitted use of synthetic agricultural chemicals and primarily focus on testing the end product for residues, offering a structured path for farmers to transition from chemical farming. Products meeting these standards are certified with a distinctive "Green Food-logo" in both Chinese and English. This label also includes a unique 12-digit LB-number, ensuring the product's traceability and verifying its authenticity for consumers.
