The Biograph Theater, designed by Samuel N. Crowen in 1914, is a historic landmark in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood, famously known for a dramatic incident from its past. It gained national notoriety on July 22, 1934, when notorious bank robber John Dillinger was ambushed and killed by FBI agents, led by Melvin Purvis, just outside after watching a film; his whereabouts were famously tipped off by his companion, Ana Cumpănaș, known as "The Woman in Red."
Designated a Chicago Landmark in 2001, the Biograph initially served as a movie house, also gaining fame in later decades for its raucous midnight screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. In 2004, the Victory Gardens Theater acquired the Biograph, undertaking an $11 million renovation completed in 2006 to transform it into a modern live performance venue, meticulously preserving its original architectural features. Today, it operates as the Victory Gardens at the Biograph, presenting live theatrical productions.
