The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is a vital statutory body established on September 5, 2008, under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. Created by the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, its primary function is to regulate and set science-based standards for the manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import of all food articles, thereby ensuring food safety across the nation. This landmark Act consolidated numerous older food safety laws, streamlining India's approach to food regulation under a single authority.
Headquartered in New Delhi, the FSSAI operates through regional offices and a network of over 200 laboratories nationwide, and is currently led by chairperson Ms. Punya Salila Srivastava and CEO Rajit Punhani. The Authority is empowered to frame regulations, provide scientific advice, collect data on food consumption and risks, and promote public awareness regarding food safety and nutrition. Notably, in 2021, FSSAI introduced perpetual licenses for restaurants and food manufacturers, simplifying compliance for businesses provided they file annual returns.
