The Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Institute is a national University Transportation Center headquartered at the University of Minnesota. Established in 1991 under the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA), it focuses on enhancing transportation safety and mobility, particularly in northern climates and rural environments.

Led by director Max Donath, the institute conducts extensive research using human-centered technologies like computing and sensing systems, publishing reports on topics such as distracted driving, teen drivers, and bus rapid transit. Key facilities include the Intelligent Vehicles Laboratory and the Minnesota Traffic Observatory. Beyond research, the ITS Institute also contributes to education by organizing the Advanced Transportation Technologies seminar series and offering K-12 programs, making it a vital center for innovation.
