A Learning Management System (LMS) is a software application designed for the administration, delivery, and tracking of educational courses and training programs, emerging directly from e-learning in the late 1990s. These platforms now dominate the learning system market, widely adopted by higher education and experiencing massive growth during the COVID-19 pandemic due to remote learning. LMSs facilitate online content delivery, supporting both asynchronous and synchronous learning, and utilize analytical data and intelligent algorithms to identify learning gaps and recommend courses. Its development was preceded by centuries of distance education, from Caleb Phillips' 1723 correspondence teaching and Isaac Pitman's 1840 shorthand course to early multimedia teaching machines and the pioneering Plato Learning Management System in the 1970s.
