The Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy (UMFCD) in Bucharest, Romania, is one of the country's oldest and most prestigious public health sciences institutions. Founded in 1857 by the eminent physician Carol Davila and Nicolae Kretzulescu as the National School of Medicine and Pharmacy, it was later integrated into the University of Bucharest's Faculty of Medicine in 1869.
The university boasts a rich history of significant contributions, including its association with Nobel laureate George Emil Palade, who studied and taught there. Notably, the isolation of insulin by Nicolae Paulescu in 1921, a discovery that stirred Nobel controversy, occurred at its Faculty of Pharmacy. After separating from the University of Bucharest in 1948 and several name changes, it officially became the Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in 1991. Today, UMFCD is recognized as an "advanced research and education university," consistently ranking among the top institutions globally in clinical medicine and considered a leading force in European medical education.
