The UTSA Roadrunners football program, representing the University of Texas at San Antonio, competes in the FBS and the American Conference, playing its home games at the Alamodome (with a restricted capacity of 36,582) under current head coach Jeff Traylor. The program's inception began with a 2006 feasibility study, followed by a 2007 student referendum where 66% of voters supported a fee increase, and final approval from the UT System Board of Regents in 2008 for an $84 million athletic complex. In March 2009, the team hired its first head coach, Larry Coker, who had won the 2001 national championship with Miami, to lead the nascent program. The inaugural signing class was unveiled on National Signing Day in February 2010, featuring 27 players—most drawn heavily from the Greater San Antonio area—who were all redshirted during the 2010 FCS season. Initially planning to join the Southland Conference (an FCS league), the athletic department shifted its ambitions in early 2010 to pursue an FBS bid by 2014, intending to compete as an independent until securing a conference invitation.
