The Drake–Northern Iowa rivalry is a collegiate athletics rivalry between Drake University (Bulldogs) and the University of Northern Iowa (Panthers), both located in Iowa and members of the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC), with campuses just 108 miles apart. Though Drake was a charter MVC member and UNI only joined in 1991, the rivalry intensified after that, especially in basketball. In men's hoops, Drake reached the 1969 Final Four, while UNI famously upset Kansas to reach the 2010 Sweet Sixteen; the teams also played dramatic MVC tournament games, including Drake's historic 2020 upset of the #1 seed and a 2021 walkover due to COVID-19. In women's basketball, Drake has historically been stronger, reaching the 1982 Elite Eight and winning the 2017 and 2018 MVC tournament titles over UNI, though UNI beat them in the 2016 WNIT. The rivalry also stretches back over a century in baseball, with the first official game in 1907 (though unofficial play dates to 1885), and both programs have since moved to club status.
