The Dodgers–Giants rivalry is widely regarded as one of the fiercest and greatest in all of sports, dating back to the late 19th century when both clubs were based in New York City. After the 1957 season, Dodgers owner Walter O'Malley moved his team to Los Angeles and convinced Giants owner Horace Stoneham to relocate to San Francisco, transplanting the rivalry to California and prompting New York to create the Mets in 1962, who adopted blue from the Dodgers and orange from the Giants. The rivalry is fueled by the deep cultural and economic animosity between Los Angeles and San Francisco, as well as contrasting fan bases—Manhattan's elite Giants supporters versus Brooklyn's blue-collar Dodgers fans. Statistically, the Dodgers hold a slight edge in total World Series titles (9–8) and have dominated since moving west (8–3), while the Giants won the 1951 and 1962 tie-breaker series, and the Dodgers won the first modern playoff meeting in the 2021 NLDS. Most recently, the Dodgers won back-to-back World Series titles in 2025 by defeating the Blue Jays, while the Giants' last championship came in 2014.
