Hurricane Marie (August 2014) is tied as the seventh-most intense Pacific hurricane on record, reaching a minimum pressure of 918 mbar and Category 5 winds of 160 mph (260 km/h) on August 24. Originating from a tropical wave that crossed the Atlantic, it was classified as a tropical depression on August 22 near Acapulco, Mexico, and rapidly intensified before an eyewall replacement cycle prompted steady weakening. By August 29, it had degenerated into a remnant low, eventually dissipating on September 2 northeast of Hawaii. Although its center stayed offshore, its massive size (gale-force winds spanning 575 miles) generated dangerous surf and heavy rains, causing five deaths in Mexico—three in Los Cabos and two in Colima/Oaxaca. The storm also produced one of the largest hurricane-related surf events in decades for Southern California, damaging a Long Beach breakwater ($10 million) and leading to one drowning in Malibu, with total losses reaching $20 million.
