The Michigan Wolverines football team represents the University of Michigan and holds the record for the most all-time wins in college football history, while being famous for its iconic winged helmet, massive stadium attendance, and the fierce annual rivalry with Ohio State known as "The Game." Beginning play in 1879, the program joined the Big Ten in 1896 and has claimed 12 national championships, including wire-service titles in 1948, 1997, and 2023. Legendary coaches include Fielding H. Yost, whose "Point-a-Minute" squads went unbeaten for 56 games and won the first Rose Bowl in 1902, and Bo Schembechler, who captured 13 Big Ten titles during his 21-year tenure (1969–1989) in the famed "Ten Year War" against Ohio State. After a period of decline, former quarterback Jim Harbaugh revitalized the program, leading the Wolverines to three straight Big Ten titles and College Football Playoff appearances (2021–2023), culminating in a national championship victory over Washington in 2023. Harbaugh then left for the NFL, and after a brief tenure by Sherrone Moore, longtime Utah coach Kyle Whittingham took over in 2025. The program has produced three Heisman Trophy winners—Tom Harmon (1940), Desmond Howard (1991), and Charles Woodson (1997)—as well as future U.S. President Gerald Ford, who was team MVP in 1934.
