Johnny Gargano (born August 14, 1987) is an American professional wrestler currently signed to WWE's SmackDown brand, famously dubbed "The Heart and Soul of NXT" for his record-breaking success there. Starting his career in 2005 on the independent circuit, he competed for top promotions like Chikara, Evolve, and Dragon Gate USA, where he held the Open the Freedom Gate Championship twice, with his first reign lasting a record 873 days. After signing with WWE in 2016, he formed the celebrated tag team #DIY with Tommaso Ciampa, winning the NXT Tag Team Championship before their bitter rivalry led him to win the NXT North American Championship in January 2019 and the NXT Championship in April 2019, making him the first-ever NXT Triple Crown Champion. He went on to win the NXT North American Championship two more times in 2020, becoming the first wrestler to hold that title three times. Following a brief departure in December 2021, he returned to WWE in August 2022 and later reunited with Ciampa as #DIY on the main roster, capturing the WWE Tag Team Championship in July and December 2024. Raised in Lakewood, Ohio, Gargano began training at age 16 and developed a unique "Lucharesu" style, blending British chain wrestling, lucha libre, and puroresu.
