Denis Shapovalov (born April 15, 1999, in Tel Aviv, Israel) is a Canadian professional tennis player who reached a career-high world No. 10 in singles in September 2020, making him the third-highest-ranked Canadian male in history. He burst onto the scene in 2017 as the youngest player ever to reach an ATP Masters 1000 semifinal at the Canadian Open, and has since won four ATP singles titles, including his first at the 2019 Stockholm Open, and reached the Wimbledon semifinals in 2021. In doubles, he partnered with Rohan Bopanna to reach the 2020 US Open quarterfinals and became Canada's No. 1 doubles player. Known for his aggressive, left-handed play with a one-handed backhand and serve-and-volley style, he was voted the ATP Most Improved Player and Star of Tomorrow in 2017, and also won the Lionel Conacher Award as Canada's male athlete of the year. Raised in Vaughan, Ontario, after his family emigrated from Israel, he was coached by his mother Tessa, a former tennis player from Soviet Ukraine, and began playing at age 5.
