ESPN Bet was a sports betting brand operated by Penn Entertainment under a licensing agreement with ESPN, officially launching on November 14, 2023. It replaced the Barstool Sportsbook, which Penn had launched in 2020 after buying a stake in Barstool Sports—a brand Penn later sold back to founder Dave Portnoy for just $1 in August 2023. The rebranding was part of a massive 10-year, $1.5 billion deal that gave ESPN Bet access to ESPN's marketing and talent, allowing it to operate mobile betting in 18 states and retail sportsbooks at Penn casinos. Despite this high-profile launch, the service failed to capture significant market share, leading Penn and ESPN to terminate their partnership early in November 2025. As a result, Penn migrated ESPN Bet customers to its theScore Bet app, while rival DraftKings stepped in as ESPN's new official sports betting partner.
