Whitefish Bay is a 225.5-metre (739-foot) self-unloading lake freighter that entered service with Canada Steamship Lines (CSL) in 2013 as the third vessel in the company's modern Trillium-class. Built at the Chengxi shipyard in Jiangyin, China, the ship is powered by an 8,750-kilowatt diesel engine and is designed to haul massive bulk cargoes like coal and ore across the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway. She shares her sister-ship designation with Baie Comeau, Baie St. Paul, and Thunder Bay, and was famously featured by Canadian comedian Rick Mercer during a transit of the Welland Canal. However, on 12 July 2016, the vessel suffered a severe power failure and ran aground at Hamilton Island in the Saint Lawrence Seaway east of Cornwall, Ontario, while carrying a load of coal. Tugboats successfully refloated the ship on 14 July 2016, allowing it to be towed to Saint-Zotique, Quebec, for inspection before resuming its regular duties.
