The PlayStation 2 (PS2), developed by Sony Computer Entertainment, was first released in Japan on March 4, 2000, and later in North America and Europe that same year, competing with the GameCube, Dreamcast, and Xbox in the sixth generation of consoles. Developed under the guidance of Ken Kutaragi, it featured a custom Emotion Engine processor co-designed with Toshiba, alongside a built-in DVD drive and full backward compatibility with original PlayStation games, which gave it a huge launch library advantage. The PS2 became the best-selling video game console of all time, with over 160 million units sold worldwide and a library of more than 4,000 game titles totaling 1.54 billion copies. In 2004, Sony released a smaller "Slimline" revision, and the console remained in production long after its successor, the PlayStation 3, arrived in 2006. It received new games until the release of Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 in November 2013, and was finally discontinued on January 4, 2013, marking one of the longest lifespans in gaming history.
