Marcus Smart, born March 6, 1994, is an American professional basketball player currently with the Los Angeles Lakers, widely recognized as one of the NBA's premier point-of-attack defenders. After playing college basketball for the Oklahoma State Cowboys, he was drafted sixth overall by the Boston Celtics in 2014. Smart distinguished himself as a defensive force, winning the prestigious NBA Defensive Player of the Year award in the 2021–22 season—a rare feat for a guard—and earning two NBA All-Defensive First Team selections.
He also received three NBA Hustle Awards and was instrumental in the Celtics reaching the 2022 NBA Finals. After eight impactful seasons in Boston, Smart was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in 2023 and, according to the article, is slated to be traded again to the Washington Wizards in 2025.
