Letitia Ann "Tish" James, born October 18, 1958, is the current 67th Attorney General of New York, serving since 2019, notably making her the first African American and first woman to hold this prominent statewide office. A Brooklyn native, James earned her law degree from Howard University and built a distinguished career, including serving on the New York City Council from 2004 to 2013. Her political ascent continued when she became the New York City Public Advocate from 2013 to 2018, marking her as the first African-American woman to be elected to and hold a citywide office in NYC.

As Attorney General, James gained significant national attention for filing a high-profile civil suit against Donald Trump, which initially resulted in substantial penalties exceeding $400 million, though this figure is currently under appeal. After a brief candidacy for the 2022 New York gubernatorial election, she opted to seek re-election as Attorney General. More recently, in October 2025, James was federally indicted on charges of bank fraud and making false statements to a financial institution, to which she has pleaded not guilty.
