SummerSlam: The Biggest Party of the Summer
SummerSlam is WWE's annual professional wrestling extravaganza, launched in 1988 and famously dubbed "The Biggest Party of the Summer," holding the distinction as the company's second-largest event after WrestleMania. Part of WWE's prestigious "Big Five" pay-per-views, it was created by Vince McMahon in the late 1980s to expand their major event schedule. The inaugural SummerSlam took place on August 29, 1988, at Madison Square Garden.
A significant moment occurred in 1992 when the event was held at Wembley Stadium in London, drawing over 80,000 fans—WWE's first major pay-per-view outside North America. While traditionally held in August, a brief shift to July occurred in 2022 before returning, and notably, SummerSlam will expand to a two-night format starting in 2025. Since 2021, the event has been hosted in large NFL stadiums, consistently breaking attendance and gross revenue records, solidifying its status as WWE's highest-grossing non-WrestleMania event.
