Kamala Devi Harris, born October 20, 1964, is an American politician and attorney who served as the 49th Vice President of the United States from 2021 to 2025 under President Joe Biden. She made history as the first female, first African American, and first Asian American U.S. Vice President, becoming the highest-ranking female and Asian American official in the nation's history. Before her vice presidency, Harris built a distinguished career as California's Attorney General from 2011 to 2017 and later as a U.S. Senator for California from 2017 to 2021, where she advocated for reforms and gained a national profile. As Vice President, she presided over an evenly split U.S. Senate and cast a record 33 tie-breaking votes, instrumental in passing significant legislation like the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. In July 2024, Harris became the Democratic Party's presidential nominee but ultimately lost the election to former President Donald Trump.
