Poetry Ireland (Éigse Éireann) is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to fostering poets and poetry, in both Irish and English, across the island of Ireland, receiving essential funding from both the Arts Council of Ireland and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. Founded in 1978 by John F. Deane and based in Dublin's Parnell Square, the organization celebrated its thirtieth anniversary in 2008 with events culminating in Paris, and is currently directed by Liz Kelly with a board featuring distinguished figures like Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Paul Muldoon.
The organization publishes the quarterly Poetry Ireland Review, showcasing Irish and international poets, alongside its bimonthly Poetry Ireland News and the more accessible literary pamphlet, Trumpet. Its extensive educational initiatives include the long-running Writers in Schools Scheme, the Poetry Aloud competition, and the significant "Poets' Chair" – a film archive preserving the work of contemporary Irish poets like Seamus Heaney and Eavan Boland for future generations. Beyond this, Poetry Ireland offers comprehensive support for poets, including financially assisting over 120 readings annually, providing workshops, literary advice, and maintaining a valuable information service for new and established writers.
