The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) is a prominent multi-campus research institution dedicated to advancing environmental, estuarine, and marine science. Its origins trace back to a 1925 research station on Solomons Island, officially assuming its current name in 1997.

UMCES conducts extensive research and offers educational opportunities, focusing particularly on the challenges facing the Chesapeake Bay and global climate change, with programs spanning the U.S. and internationally. Led by President Peter Goodwin since 2017, who succeeded Donald Boesch, the center operates from five constituent research locations across Maryland. It further enhances public and scientific understanding through its Integration and Application Network, providing valuable data and visualization tools for researchers and the general public.
