Summary of Idaho Transportation Department

The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) oversees the state's transportation infrastructure, including highways, bridges, railroads, airports, and ports. Its responsibilities encompass planning, maintenance, and funding for transportation projects within Idaho.

The department's origins can be traced back to 1913 with the State Highway Commission. Over the years, it has evolved through various reorganizations, with the current structure established in 1974 when it became the Idaho Transportation Department. ITD was further expanded in 1982 when the Department of Motor Vehicles was transferred to its authority.

ITD is organized into five divisions (Administration, Aeronautics, Highways, Human Resources, and Motor Vehicles) and six district offices, each responsible for specific geographical areas. The department operates under the guidance of a seven-member Idaho Transportation Board appointed by the governor.

ITD maintains over 12,200 miles of roads, more than 1,800 bridges, and a vast network of transportation infrastructure. It also operates 29 rest areas and 12 ports of entry. The department's mission is to provide safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation solutions for the citizens of Idaho.
