Introduction
The colonial history of the United States encompasses the period from the early 16th century to the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War in 1776, during which European powers established and maintained colonies in North America.
European Settlement
- 16th Century:
- Spanish explorers led by Juan Ponce de León and Hernando de Soto explored the southeastern coast and interior of North America.

Colonial Society

Colonial Conflicts

- Native American tribes resisted European settlement, leading to conflicts such as King Philip's War (1675-1676).
- French and Indian Wars:
- A series of wars between French and British forces over control of the Ohio Valley.
- Seven Years' War (1754-1763):
- Global conflict between Britain and France, which ended with British victory and the transfer of French territories in North America to Britain.
Mercantilism and the American Revolution
- Mercantilism:
- Economic system imposed by Britain on its colonies to maximize profits.
- Resulted in restrictions on trade, high taxes, and limited political autonomy.
- American Revolution (1776-1783):
- Growing resentment of British policies led to the American colonies declaring independence in 1776.
