The Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering at Purdue University offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees, including a unique combined MD-MS BME program in partnership with the Indiana University School of Medicine. Its origins trace back to the Hillenbrand Biomedical Engineering Center, founded in 1974 by Dr. Leslie A. Geddes. The center was elevated to a department in 1998 under founding head George R. Wodicka.
The department was formally expanded into a school and named after alumnus Norman Weldon and his family following their generous $10 million donation, which supported faculty hiring and research initiatives. In 2006, the Weldon School moved into a new, state-of-the-art $25 million Biomedical Engineering Building, later renamed Martin C. Jischke Hall, which houses its academic and research facilities. The school focuses its research on four signature areas, including Engineered Biomaterials and Biomechanics, Imaging, Instrumentation, and Quantitative Cellular & Systems Engineering.
