The Kazakh State Academic Drama Theater named after M.O. Auezov, a prominent cultural landmark in Almaty, Kazakhstan, stands out with its grand, traditionally designed building featuring solemn columns and surfaces decorated in traditional style. This impressive venue includes a large 1,000-seat auditorium and a 250-seat experimental theater, and is fronted by a monument to its namesake, Mukhtar Auezov, a celebrated Kazakh writer known for his epic novel, "The Path of Abai."
Established in late 1925 in Kyzylorda, the then-capital, the theater moved to Almaty in 1928, earning its "Academic" title in 1937. It was officially renamed after Auezov in 1961 following his death, honoring his significant contributions to Kazakh literature and drama. In 1982, the theater relocated to its current, modern facility in central Almaty, where it continues to host classical and modern productions primarily in the Kazakh language, offering Russian translations for its diverse audience.
