Pediatrics (or paediatrics) is the medical specialty dedicated to the care of infants, children, adolescents, and young adults, with age limits varying globally—ranging from 12 in India to 18 in the Commonwealth, while the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends care through age 21 (and sometimes up to 26 depending on insurance). The term derives from Greek words meaning "healer of children," and pediatricians work in clinics, hospitals, and research centers, often subspecializing in areas like neonatology. The field has ancient roots, with child-specific medical issues mentioned in the Hippocratic Corpus (5th century BC) and ancient Indian texts like the Sushruta Samhita, though early dedicated works were scarce. During the Islamic Golden Age, Persian physician al-Razi (865–925) published a monograph on children's diseases and is sometimes called the "father of pediatrics." The first printed pediatric texts, known as the Pediatric Incunabula, appeared in the late 15th century, and Swedish physician Nils Rosén von Rosenstein (1706–1773) is widely considered the founder of modern pediatrics as a distinct specialty.
