The postpartum period begins after childbirth and typically lasts six to eight weeks, divided into three phases: the acute phase (6–12 hours), the subacute phase (six weeks), and the delayed phase (up to six months). The World Health Organization (WHO) describes this as the most critical yet neglected phase, as most maternal and newborn deaths occur during this time. Hospital stays average one to two days for vaginal births and three to four days for cesareans, with early discharge defined as leaving within 48 hours. In the acute phase, the greatest risk is postpartum bleeding, managed through uterine massage, and routine episiotomies are now discouraged in favor of selective use. Infants are evaluated using the Apgar score, and modern practice encourages immediate skin-to-skin contact. Notably, 87–94% of women report at least one health problem during the subacute phase, and 31% face long-term issues.
