Sloane Stephens

Sloane Stephens (born March 20, 1993, in Plantation, Florida) is an American professional tennis player who reached a career-high singles ranking of world No. 3 and won her first major title at the 2017 US Open. Raised by her mother, Sybil Smith (a pioneering All-American swimmer), and stepfather after her biological father—NFL running back John Stephens—left, she started playing tennis at age nine in Fresno and became a top junior, winning three girls' doubles majors in 2010 with Tímea Babos. She burst onto the senior scene at age 19 by reaching the 2013 Australian Open semifinals, notably defeating Serena Williams, but later regressed until a resurgence under coach Kamau Murray in 2016, which was cut short by a foot injury. Returning from injury in 2017, she famously won the US Open in just her fifth tournament back, earning the WTA Comeback Player of the Year award. She continued her success in 2018 by winning the Miami Open, reaching the French Open final (finishing runner-up), and cracking the top 10 for the first time, while also finishing runner-up at the WTA Finals. Overall, she has claimed eight WTA singles titles and one doubles title, with a career-high doubles ranking of No. 63.
