Rohit "Ro" Khanna (born September 13, 1976) is a Democratic U.S. Representative for California's 17th congressional district, a seat he has held since 2017 after defeating eight-term incumbent Mike Honda in the 2016 election. Born in Philadelphia to Indian immigrants from Punjab, he is a graduate of the University of Chicago and Yale Law School, and previously served as Deputy Assistant Secretary in the U.S. Department of Commerce under President Barack Obama from 2009 to 2011. A self-described "progressive capitalist," Khanna champions an "abundance agenda" and "new economic patriotism," and he co-founded the Congressional Antitrust Caucus while advocating for stricter tech regulation and increased housing supply through the bipartisan YIMBY Caucus. He endorsed Bernie Sanders in 2016 and co-chaired Sanders' 2020 presidential campaign, and is a multimillionaire with an estimated net worth ranging from $27 million to over $340 million. In 2025 and 2026, Khanna drew national attention through town halls in Republican-held districts and appearances in early-voting states, leading many outlets to speculate about a potential run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028.
