The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (formerly WFIRST) is a NASA infrared observatory scheduled to launch to a Sun-Earth L2 orbit on 30 August 2026, following the completion of its construction in November 2025. Named after NASA's first chief of astronomy, it utilizes a 2.4-meter mirror donated by the National Reconnaissance Office, paired with a 300.8-megapixel Wide-Field Instrument that captures images 100 times larger than Hubble's, along with a Coronagraph Instrument for direct exoplanet imaging. Its primary goals include probing dark energy, testing general relativity, and searching for exoplanets via gravitational microlensing. Recommended as the top priority by the 2010 Decadal Survey, the mission was approved for development in February 2016 and is led by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. The design evolved from the Joint Dark Energy Mission, gaining significant momentum when the NRO donated its telescopes in 2012.
