The North Carolina Tar Heels football team represents the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) at the NCAA Division I FBS level. The program has claimed five ACC championships, with the most recent coming in 1980, and has produced 30 first-team All-Americans, though it has never been a consistent powerhouse. Notably, the team was involved in one of the first uses of the forward pass in an 1895 game against Georgia, and in 1898 they posted a perfect 9–0 season, claiming a Southern championship after a dominant 53–0 victory over Georgia. The team's identity is marked by its fight song "I'm a Tar Heel Born" and the Rameses mascot, while its fiercest rivalry is with NC State, and it also shares the "South's Oldest Rivalry" with Virginia. Over the years, the program has sent numerous players to the NFL, including Hall of Famers like Lawrence Taylor and Chris Hanburger, as well as modern stars like Julius Peppers, Mitch Trubisky, and Drake Maye.
