The Institute of Business Ethics (IBE) is a London-based non-profit organisation established in November 1986 by Neville John Cooper to promote business ethics nationally and internationally. Its founding, at the behest of Sir Terence Beckett of the CBI, occurred amidst the "Big Bang" deregulation of the City of London, aiming to foster trust through ethical conduct rather than solely legal frameworks. The IBE sought to uphold the London Stock Exchange's motto "My Word Is My Bond" under these changing conditions.
Originally operating within the Christian Association of Business Executives (CABE), the IBE gained independent charitable status in 2000. The Institute quickly became influential, notably backing the 1991 Cadbury Committee, which significantly globalized the concept of corporate governance. Over the years, the IBE has published numerous books, conducted surveys on ethical codes, developed training programmes, and collaborated with academics to integrate business ethics into education, with long-time Research Director Simon Webley making prolific contributions. While consistently striving to improve business ethics, one scholar noted that its overall impact on moral standards or public perception between 1986 and 2016 was limited.
