Toy Story 3 (2010) is Pixar's acclaimed animated sequel directed by Lee Unkrich, in which a teenage Andy heads to college, and his toys—Woody, Buzz, and the gang—are accidentally donated to Sunnyside Daycare, only to discover it's run as a cruel police state by the villainous Lots-O'-Huggin' Bear (Lotso). The film's production was notably turbulent: after a 2004 dispute between Disney and Pixar, Disney planned a version at its Circle Seven studio, but the project was rebooted under Pixar following Disney's 2006 acquisition, ultimately costing a hefty $200 million. Premiering at Italy's Taormina Film Fest on June 12, 2010, and hitting U.S. theaters on June 18, it was the first film released with Dolby Surround 7.1 sound. It made history as the first animated film to gross $1 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2010 and the fourth-highest of all time at its release. Critics praised its emotional depth, screenplay, and Randy Newman's score, earning it Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song, plus a historic Best Picture nomination—only the third animated film to achieve that. A sequel, Toy Story 4, followed in 2019.
