The Little Rascals Day Care Center case in Edenton, North Carolina, was a landmark example of the 1980s–90s satanic ritual abuse hysteria, spanning arrests and trials from 1989 to 1995. Triggered by a single accusation in January 1989, authorities urged parents to have children evaluated, leading to 90 children making allegations—often only after months of suggestive therapy—against dozens of townspeople, ultimately resulting in charges against seven adults, including owner-operators Bob and Betsy Kelly, for crimes ranging from rape to bizarre claims of baby murders and shark attacks. Bob Kelly's eight-month trial, the most expensive in North Carolina history, ended in his conviction on 99 of 100 charges with twelve consecutive life sentences, despite no parents noticing any behavioral changes during the alleged abuse period. However, on May 2, 1995, the Court of Appeals reversed all of Kelly's convictions, citing the children's "refreshed" memories from therapy and heavy prosecution coaching, effectively exonerating him. The other six defendants faced mixed fates, with sentences from seven years to life imprisonment, leaving a lasting legacy of how moral panic and flawed interrogation can destroy lives.
