Martian meteorite

Martian meteorites are rocks that formed on Mars, were ejected into space by impacts, and eventually landed on Earth—with 277 classified by September 2020, making up less than 0.5% of all known meteorites. They are grouped into three main types—shergottites, nakhlites, and chassignites (collectively called SNC)—and their Martian origin was confirmed in 1983 when trapped gases in the EET79001 shergottite matched the Martian atmosphere analyzed by the Viking landers. A recent standout is Taoudenni 002, the second-largest complete Martian meteorite, recovered in Mali in early 2021; weighing 14.5 kilograms (32 pounds), it now resides at the Maine Mineral and Gem Museum. Shergottites make up about three-quarters of these samples, named after the Shergotty meteorite that fell in India in 1865, but they present a fascinating puzzle: they crystallized only ~180 million years ago, a surprisingly young age for Mars' ancient surface, fueling the ongoing "Shergottite Age Paradox." These meteorites offer our only direct physical samples of Mars, though the term excludes rocks found on Mars itself (like Heat Shield Rock), and research continues to debate their exact ages and origins.
