On June 5, 2009, a catastrophic fire at the ABC Day Care Center in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, killed 49 people, mostly infants and toddlers, after a blaze in a nearby state-operated warehouse spread rapidly to the facility. The tragedy was compounded by the building's poor safety features, including only one operational exit and windows mounted too high for rescue, despite the center having passed an inspection just a week prior. The daycare was federally funded but privately operated, and its owners had familial ties to state officials and First Lady Margarita Zavala, leading to the resignation of two state officials but no arrests. A heroic passerby, Francisco Manuel López Villaescusa, drove his truck through the walls to create escape holes, while firefighters took two hours to contain the fire. Many of the injured were treated in hospitals in Guadalajara and even in California, with the final death toll rising over the following weeks as additional children succumbed to their injuries.
