On Memorial Day, May 27, 2019, a devastating EF4 tornado struck Dayton, Ohio, and its suburbs, injuring 166 people and indirectly causing one death. Part of a larger severe weather outbreak, it was the first EF4 tornado in Ohio since 2010 and the first of two EF4s that day, with the other occurring in Kansas. The tornado carved an 18.17-mile path through Montgomery County, lasting 32 minutes, reaching a peak width of 1,050 yards, and causing an estimated $500 million in damage. After touching down west of Brookville, it rapidly intensified to EF2 strength, severely damaging homes, a wastewater treatment plant, and Brookville High School, before moving into Trotwood where it reached EF3 intensity, collapsing roofs and walls. The storm developed from a supercell in an environment of strong instability and wind shear, prompting a Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) warning as it moved through the region.
