Frank Mir (born May 24, 1979) was a dominant American mixed martial artist who became a UFC Heavyweight Champion and finished his career in Bellator MMA in 2019. He holds the record for the most submission victories in UFC heavyweight history and was the first fighter to both knock out and submit the legendary Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira. Before entering the octagon, Mir was a high school wrestling state champion and a record-holding discus thrower, having earned a black belt in American Kenpo as a teenager. He made his UFC debut in November 2001 with a quick armbar win over Roberto Traven, and later submitted notable fighters like Pete Williams and Tank Abbott. In June 2004, he won the vacant UFC Heavyweight Championship by breaking Tim Sylvia's forearm with an armbar, a victory that earned him his BJJ black belt. Mir remained under UFC contract for nearly 16 years, holding the longest uninterrupted tenure in the promotion's history before retiring in 2019.
