Houston Dynamo FC is a professional soccer club in Major League Soccer (MLS) that was established on December 15, 2005, when the league relocated the San Jose Earthquakes' players and staff to Houston. The club initially played at Robertson Stadium before moving to its current home, Shell Energy Stadium, in 2012, and is now majority-owned by Ted Segal. The Dynamo found immediate success, winning the MLS Cup in their first two seasons (2006 and 2007) and later adding U.S. Open Cup titles in 2018 and 2023. Interestingly, the team was originally named "Houston 1836" but was changed to "Dynamo" after backlash from the Mexican community, who viewed the date (the year of the Texas Revolution) as offensive. They have also been MLS Cup runners-up twice (2011 and 2012) and reached the final of the defunct North American SuperLiga.
